Advances in plant breeding have produced a staggering variety of crops. However, if new crop varieties are not tested in real-world settings before being used, they may not suit the needs of farmers or the changing climatic conditions in which they live and work. 1000FARMS is an institutional platform of the CGIAR-National Agricultural Research and Extension Systems (NARES) breeding networks. It aims to magnify the networks’ impact by enabling them to generate on-farm data on late-stage selection candidates and new releases. This will ensure that new varieties are high-performing in the hands of farmers, farmer-preferred, climate-adapted and can be recommended for scaling.
The 1000FARMS project is an initiative aimed at enhancing agricultural practices through extensive on-farm research and data collection. Our aim is to implement an Africa-wide network for on-farm variety testing that is digitally supported to provide vital performance data and farmer feedback. This will accelerate breeding of new climate-adapted and farmer-preferred crop varieties.

Farm-centric research generally involves On-Farm Experimentation and may be better described as 'Farm Action Research', i.e. research conducted at least in part by and for beneficiaries who also farm.
Plant breeding is the science of adapting the genetics of plants to produce more desirable characteristics, in agriculture these typically include improved yield, in-field performance and end use quality.
1000FARMS would like to invite you to our biweekly webinars highlighting the varied projects carried out by project partners. The webinars will be every 2 weeks (normally on a Tuesday afternoon CET) and are open to anyone. The format is a 15-minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of open discussion.
