This downloadable guide to living mulches is designed to help farmers make informed decisions about adopting living mulch systems in arable rotations. Created to offer practical insights, it is based on interviews with UK farmers trailing living mulches and builds on original research from an Innovative Farmers Field Lab and ongoing studies by the Organic Research Centre

Agricology has kicked off a new series of Technical Guides with this guide designed to support farmers in making informed decisions about adopting living mulches in arable systems. It draws together farmer experience and research from Innovative Farmers and the Organic Research Centre to answer farmers’ questions on how best to implement living mulches. Its aim is to provide practical guidance and clarity across the key stages of the process, outlining the necessary actions, considerations, and potential risks at each step. It includes alternative strategies for those working within conventional systems, as well as organic and low-input arable farming.

A detailed case study covers Matt England’s observations and reflections from trialling living mulches on the Fring Estate in Norfolk.

Alongside the Technical Guide Agricology have created a Living Mulches Hub, which pulls together a wide range of resources; videos, webinars, research papers, tools and reports on living mulches, for those who wish to delve deeper into the topic.

Practical sustainable farming regardless of labels.

This field lab's objective is to investigate the potential of living mulches, creating a permanent clover understory to suppress weeds, cycle nutrients, protect and enhance soil health, as a means to achieving organic and low-input no-till systems - that can be more sustainable than those systems they seek to replace.

Interest is growing in using legumes like lucerne or clover as a permanent understory to cereal crops to provide nitrogen through the season.

Agricology have launched a brand new resource collection designed to help growers design and implement effective crop rotations in field-scale vegetable systems.
