Understanding what works on farm through Explanations, Evidence, Experimentation and Exchange.

We are developing a community that supports knowledge generation and sharing of 'what works' on-farm, bringing together people, tools and resources - Do you want to be part of it?

For any one looking to test agronomic solutions for the ADOPT program we can support projects as facilitators, contractors or project partners.

Farmers face an ever increasing number of decisions on the practices, products and technologies to adopt on their farms. Every farm and farmer is different, with a unique combination of soil, climate and management history.  But there are underlying principles of biology, chemistry, physics and socio-economics that apply generally - there is huge opportunity to connect farmers, advisors and researchers to understand 'what works' on-farm within a given context.

.4Es of ARC - Explanations, Evidence, Experimentation and Exchange

The ARC aims to bring together organisations, networks, tools and resources to enable and scale on-farm research, using explanations, evidence, experimentation and exchange. We can operationalise an approach to tackling any question in agriculture; distilling knowledge (FarmPEP) to define a shared conceptual framework and metrics to measure; benchmarking data across farms to derive insights both on individual farms and across the dataset (eg YENs); co-ordinated on-farm experiments designed to enable robust comparisons (eg ADAS Agronomics); exchange of practical experience and feedback from farmers and stakeholders that can feed in to shared conclusions and messages (eg BOFIN, Innovative Farmers).

To support the ARC we've developed an on-farm trials portal with Data Farming to enable the easy set up of Line trials accounting for underlying spatial variation, and monitoring of treatment comparisons through the season with satellite imagery - try it out at https://arc.datafarming.com

Please join this page if you'd like to get involved in ARC and shape its development - or contact daniel@arcagsci.com.

We are currently writing a paper exploring tools to support the 4Es in OFR - explanations, evidence, experimentation & exchange.  Get in touch if you have anything to add

We are creating an Innovation Community - would you sign up to a community to have first opportunity to try new products and services on-farm?

We are thinking about initiating an ARC Innovators communuity for farmers who want to test new products and technologies, or get involved in new projects. Good idea? let me know if you'd like to get involved.

Farm-centric research generally involves On-Farm Experimentation and may be better described as 'Farm Action Research', i.e. research conducted at least in part by and for beneficiaries who also farm.

On Farm Experimentation (OFE) is increasingly being recognised as having transformative power in improving performance in agricultural systems across the world.

We are starting an ADOPT project with four farmers in Yorkshire to explore how we can make better crop nutrition decisions. Working with ADAS and the High Mowthorpe Farming Association and other local groups we are looking to engage more widely to gather and test ideas and experiences.

Knowledge Exchange in Agriculture in the UK is diverse, with many organisations involved. That is part of the reason for creating Farm-PEP, to help provide connections to what many percieve as a fragmented landscape.

Many of the most telling innovations that make a difference on-farm come from farmers themselves, or from close collaboration between farmers, advisors, industry and researchers
