I've been working at ADAS as a Soil Scientist for 18 years. I'm a Chartered Scientist and past Board Member of the British Society of Soil Science with over 30 years of research experience working on soil, nutrient and manure management in the UK and overseas. I've undertaken applied and policy-driven research for the European Commission, Defra, AHDB and devolved administrations and have specialist knowledge of the interface between policy, legislation, scientific evidence and the practical application of sustainable farming practices. I've led a number of key nutrient and manure management projects including the AHDB review and revision of RB209 (Fertiliser Recommendations) in 2016-17. I was the lead author of the “Mitigation Methods – User Guide” (an Inventory of Mitigation Methods and Guide to their Effects on Diffuse Water Pollution, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Ammonia Emissions from Agriculture – Defra project WQ0106); and currently lead the European Horizon 2020 project on “Sustainable Permanent Grassland Farming Systems and Policies” (SUPER-G). I'm a BASIS accredited trainer with the FACTS (Fertiliser Advisers Certification and Training Scheme) and BASIS Nutrient Management Planning qualifications.
